Antwerp Art Weekend Special Projects
During Antwerp Art Weekend, The Constant Now showcased the work of four intriguing artists from different parts of the world, all working with film, at our central location: M HKA.
Each day features a new film, ranging from artist films to documentaries, screened continuously and accompanied by live conversations with the makers. Ndayé Kouagou, Rosine Mbakam, Kevin Osepa, and Brahim Tall, each with their unique approach, push the boundaries of film by representing and centering people of color (POC), reclaiming visual and narrative sovereignty.
This event is not just about the films, but also about the conversations and the collective reflection they inspire, especially within institutional frameworks that (cl)aim to be inclusive. The Constant Cinema was commissioned by Antwerp Art Weekend, curated and moderated by Magali Elali, founder of The Constant Now, and generously supported by the players of the National Lottery.

In 2023, the Antwerp Art Graduation Prize was awarded for the first time. With this prize, Antwerp Art seeks to support the development of young artists not yet associated with any organisation. Every year, two students with a master’s degree in fine arts are selected based on their graduation projects: one from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (KASKA) and one from Sint Lucas Antwerp (SLA). The Graduation Prize consists of a cash prize and an exhibition of new work during Antwerp Art Weekend. The 2023 laureates exhibiting their work are Jiyoung Kim (KASKA) and Susanna Ingignoli (SLA).
Find out more on their presentations here. The Antwerp Art Graduation Prize Exhibition, and the production of both artists' new work was made possible by the support of the 'Fonds voor Nieuwe Makers' (Fund for New Makers) of the city of Antwerp. We would also like to thank Kunsthal Extra City and KMSKA for generously hosting these presentations.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, Antwerp Art published a special publication that looks back on a decade of championing the art scene in Antwerp. It does so through an interview with Bart Vanderbiesen, Antwerp Art's chairman, on the history of Antwerp Art written by Liesbet Waegemans, followed by a photo essay documenting some of our memorable moments.
Besides this recap, it also offers an exciting glimpse into future plans for the cultural landscape in Antwerp. Writer Tom Peeters asked five prominent figures from the Antwerp scene about their dreams and recommendations for our city's future cultural policies, and Tamara Beheydt spoke with two international gallerists who recently opened second locations in Antwerp, on the particular qualities and opportunities our city has to offer in a globalised art market.
To close off this publication, we're introducing you to the two laureates of the first Antwerp Art Graduation Prize, Jiyoung Kim and Susanna Ingignoli, and asked the team behind Kunst in de Stad (Art in the City) to give us a sneak peak of their plans for future art integrations in Antwerp's public space, showing us some of the newly commissioned contemporary works you'll be able to encounter on Antwerp's streets, squares, and parks in the coming five years.
The publication is wonderfully designed by Vrints-Kolsteren, and coordinated by Liesbet Waegemans. You could find it in every tote bag, available at all participating venues. If you missed it, you can catch up on your reading here.
Antwerp Art would like to thank everyone involved in making our 10th edition yet another success: all participating venues for their energy and excellent programming, the city of Antwerp and the players of the National Lottery for their generous support, the entire team of M HKA for hosting our central location, the curators and artists who shaped our special projects, our partners both big and small, the Antwerp Art board and team.
Besided that we would like to thank everyone whose journey coincided with ours over the last 10 years, and helped build the Antwerp Art Weekend to what it is today.
Last but not least, we would like to thank all our visitors, for showing up each year in greater numbers than before.
On to the next 10 years!
